The Future of Star Trek
Posted by David Torres Categories: Editorials, Movies,
I was recurited to write for Gear Live by an old friend of mine. Gear Live was starting a section on comic books and they needed writers. As I searched for things to write about, I began writing about things such as Star Trek that although were not comic books, they did fit in to the genre of geek stuff that we all know and love. After talking things over with Andru Edwards who runs things here at Gear Live, it was decided that I should post my review of the new Star Trek film over at the movie section of Gear Live which is called Film Crunch. You can read my review here.
My review was pretty general and I didn’t go into any details. I decided to write about those details and give my opinion about them here. I also want to go into the current state of the Star Trek universe and what the future may hold. If you’ve read my review or already seen the film, you know that from here on out things will be different in the world of Star Trek. Lets begin….............

Movie Review: Star Trek (2009)
Posted by David Torres Categories: Paramount, Science Fiction,
Rating: *** 1/2 stars
(Warning: The following review contains some spoilers.)
The world of Star Trek in crisis! No, it’s not on the verge of dying due to the release of this film. Instead it’s on the verge of going in a whole new direction. In the 1980s, DC Comics published a mini-series entitled “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. If you are a comic book fan, you are aware of this series and know that it was written in order to say goodbye to DC’s old continuity and create an entirely new one. A new world was born. New stories were able to be told because the previous “universe” no longer existed. That is what has happened to the world of Star Trek.
In this film, there is a Romulan named Nero. Nero and his crew travel back in time and as a result create a new timeline. If you are a Trekker, I’m sure you remember the Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) episode entitled “Yesterdays Enterprise” in which the Enterprise C traveled into the future and created a new timeline. The timeline was later corrected and everything was back to normal, but that will not be the case here.
Star Trek as a franchise was certainly in a crisis prior to the release of this film. With the two previous Trek films received poorly by both fans and critics as well as the demise of the series “Enterprise” Star Trek looked dead. Many people felt that Star Trek should stay low for a while and maybe come back much later with an attempt at reviving the series. Paramount said no and went with J.J. Abrams and his crew and they have succeeded. This film was great. Tons of action; humor; heart breaking moments. I really enjoyed this film both as a fan of the franchise and as a movie on its own.

Star Trek Communicator Internet Phone
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, USB, Smartphones,
We found a very kewl Star Trek gadget in honor of the movie’s opening day. Plug the Communicator Internet Phone with built-in speaker, earphone and mic into your USB port and speak through Skype, MSN, AIM, Ichat and other IMs. Its LCD Moirà spins when the cover is open and of course it has 12 different side effects. Compatible with both Windows and Mac, it also has a 6 ft. cord, mute button and volume switch. The Communicator carries a MSRP of $44.00.

WEEKEND READING: Star Trek, Howard Chaykin, Buscema, and the Ultraverse!
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials,
Lots of great stuff this week on the internets, covering a wide variety of my geeky interests. Here’s a few of them to occupy you ‘til Monday.
STAR TREK CONTINUITY: to celebrate the release of J. J. Abrams new Star Trek movie, let’s revisit some classic Star Trek continuity, courtesy of Steve Ahlquist at Forces of Geek. (Did I mention that’s one of my favorite blogs?) He works his geek-magic on the continuity of the original series, the Gold Key Star Trek comic books, Vulcan poetry from Star Trek fanzines, James Blish’s novelizations and even Star Trek merchandise. Even if you only click the link to see Sky Diving Parachutist Mr. Spock, you have to visit.
HOWARD CHAYKIN: One of Howard Chaykin’s most recent pieces of work didn’t make it in the American edition of Christian Moerk’s debut novel, Darling Jim. At the author’s request – he’s a big fan, especially of Chaykin’s American Flagg! - Howard created an illustration for Moerk’s book. You can see a snippet of the excised art at the link where there’s a link to the much larger full-sized version. Thanks, GalleyCat!

STAR TREK: J.J. Abrams, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and John Cho Make It So!
It’s finally here. I’m talking about neither killer bees nor swine flu, nor Arlen Specter’s vote on anything pro-Democratic. I’m talking about the new Star Trek movie by J. J. Abrams starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and John Cho (Harold Lee is Sulu? Inspired!)
I’m a fan of Star Trek, but I don’t get the vapors over every new ST movie or series, or any glitch in continuity, nor do I love all things Trek. Any time the Star Trek crew beams down to a planet where the background looks like Ape City from Planet of the Apes and all the inhabitants are wearing burlap tunics as they rebel against an evil alien force who’s using them for either meat, factory work, or target practice, I’m out.
I don’t refer to Star Trek as TOS (The Original Series), I don’t care how the animated series fits into continuity, and I don’t care if anyone calls me a Trekker, a Trekkie or “Romulan Praetor.” I know just enough Star Trek trivia to run a category on “Jeopardy,” (“I’ll take ‘The Jeffries Tube’ for $400, Alex.”) but not enough to debate Klingon military history with a guy dressed as a Klingon speaking Klingon.
But I do have some Star Trek cred – thanks to writer-producer Larry Brody, I’ve actually met and chatted with D.C. Fontana at a writer’s conference in L.A.; I edited the launch issues of Malibu Comics’ Star Trek: Deep Space Nine comic book and toured the set of the DS9 TV series (with artist Gordon Purcell); I had lunch with Alexander Siddig where we talked about our favorite video games; and I was once interviewed (by Mark Altman) for the official Star Trek magazine.
So I feel I have enough of a background in Star Trek to start a flame war by doing what all the other cool kids are doing: listing their five favorite Star Trek movies. Here are mine:

Star Trek Premiere Latest Victim of Swine Flu
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Paramount, Sony, Adaptation, Drama, Science Fiction, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Upcoming Releases,
Now that residents of Mexico are sticking as close to home as possible, movie studios are having to readjust their international calendars.
Earlier this week, 20th Century Fox chose to indefinitely postpone the premiere of Wolverine. Now Paramount is following suit with the debut of Star Trek. That sci-fi prequel had been scheduled to open on May 8.
Unless the swine flu situation plateaus soon, other blockbusters could be added to the casualty list. Sony is currently monitoring events for the May 15 release of Angels & Demons. Meanwhile, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian - another Fox release - could also be pushed from its May 22 slot.

Star Trek’s Chris Pine Talks About Shatner Meeting
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Paramount, Science Fiction, Sequels, Celebrity Gossip, Upcoming Releases,
Given William Shatner’s war of words with director J.J. Abrams, no one would blame Chris Pine if he wanted to stay clear of Captain Kirk #1. But in a recent interview, the young actor reveals that he actually made contact with Shatner…twice.
Pine’s first attempt to reach out to the 78-year-old happened before he donned the uniform. “I sent him a letter very early on in the process and explained to him who I was and who this punk kid was taking over for him, for the time being, the role and he was very kind and wished me all the luck in the world,” the 28-year-old said. “I know Leonard [Nimoy] was the same way [with Zachary Quinto], there was a wonderful feeling of handing over the mantle to us and wishes for luck and all that. But it was more about allowing us the freedom to make these characters our own without having the feelings of weight and expectation and responsibility.”

Star Trek iPhone Case
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Mods / Hacks, Movies,
We dig that that there is plenty of hype around the new Star Trek movie, although we doubt the next generation can equal some of its predecessors. Still it has inspired lots of new accessories, including this iPhone case mod, which is actually an old Star Trek pin glued to the back. Hmm. We wonder if we attached our old tribble to the back of our phone, would it reproduce?

Leonard Nimoy: Back on Trek?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Paramount, Adaptation, Science Fiction, Sequels, New Releases,
Nearly two decades have passed since Leonard Nimoy, the most famous half-Vulcan in Hollywood, has portrayed his iconic role. Fans have to wait only two more weeks to see Nimoy reprise the role of Spock.
Nimoy returns to the role in the new Star Trek movie, the eleventh in the franchise and the first to feature a very young Captain Kirk and crew. He will play opposite Zachary Quinto, who plays the younger version of Mr. Spock (whose first name can’t be pronounced).
This will also mark the very first time Leonard Nimoy has played Spock without co-star William Shatner at his side. Shatner’s Kirk will not be making an appearance in the new Star Trek flick. Paramount, expecting big success for the movie, has already ordered up a sequel (which will bring the number of Trek movies up to an even dozen).
Nimoy says it’s “too earily to speculate” whether he’ll appear in that sequel, and whether or not he’ll appear in that sequel with William Shatner. Still, he says, “I don’t say ‘never’ anymore.”
